6th Northeast Green Summit to discuss environmental impact on health

The summit will be held in Silchar, Assam from November 16 to 18, 2021

Forest ministers of North Eastern states of India are heading to the Forest Ministers’ Round Table to discuss climate change and conservation issues of Northeast India during the 6th Northeast Green Summit, scheduled from November 16 to 18, 2021, at Silchar, Assam.

The summit, supported by United Nations Environment (UNEP) and organised by prominent think-tank Vibgyor NE Foundation, is the only such sustainable development conclave of the region. This year, the summit would be held at the campuses of the National Institute of Technology and Don Bosco School in the southern Assam township of Silchar.

The Northeast Green Summit espouses #BuildBackBetter as the mantra for Northeast India post-pandemic since a ‘green recovery’ could benefit not just the climate but also human health and prosperity, said, CP Marak, a former Indian Forest Service officer from Meghalaya and Advisory Board Member of the Summit.

Acknowledging innovative and successful conservation programmes across Northeast India has also been another feature of the summit. This time, Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department’s Air Gun Surrender Abhiyan – a unique conservation initiative aiming to save birds and animals from hunters – would be feted during the Summit.

“The agenda of the Forest Ministers’ Round Table will be primarily to focus matters of common concerns – climate change, animal migration, movement of forest produce, management of natural resources on interstate and international borders, forest and wildlife offence with ramifications across each other’s territory among many other issues.

Furthermore, to kick start this gala event, the organisers are organizing a GREEN CYCLOTHON on November 8, 2021. The main objective of this cyclothon is to create awareness among the public about the rapidly depleting resources. This rally also aims to promote the heritage points of Southern Assam, also known as Barak Valley, to promote eco-tourism and create awareness of sustainable development. Around 500 cyclists are expected to participate in the cyclothon.
