Top 5 teams awarded funding and incubation for AI-powered clinical innovations

AIIMS Bibinagar and the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) at IIIT Hyderabad jointly conducted the MedCare AI Impact Hackathon on Thursday at AIIMS Bibinagar Campus in Bibinagar in the city outskirts. The event brought together doctors, medical students, researchers, and deep-tech innovators to co-create scalable, AI-driven healthcare solutions.

Over 65 ideas were submitted for the challenge, of which 17 promising teams were shortlisted for the final round. The top five teams were awarded early-stage programme funding, access to IIITH’s research labs, and incubation support under a joint CIE-AIIMS initiative. Winning ideas included smart dental diagnostics, ML-based defect detection post-root canal therapy, portable caries scanners, predictive analytics for surgical planning, and real-time monitoring for critical care.

The hackathon featured dual tracks—one tailored for medical practitioners and the other for med-tech researchers—focusing on building AI-enabled clinical tools, diagnostics, and care delivery models. The event was designed to translate on-ground clinical challenges into viable health tech solutions using AI/ML, computer vision, and IoT.

Key highlights from the event:

·        Participants: 17 finalist teams comprising doctors, med-tech researchers, faculty, and students.

·        Support for Winners: Access to a Rs 5 lakh seed grant, research support, prototype development, and long-term incubation.

·        Top Innovations:

o   AI Dent Triage: AI-powered multimodal triage for dental diagnostics.

o   NeoScreen AI: Offline-compatible stool image analyser for early detection of EHBA.

o   TMJ 3D View: Automated 3D segmentation of the TMJ from MRI scans.

o   Gluco Pulse: Smart 3D-printed mouthguard to monitor salivary glucose.

o   Safeped AI: Paediatric surgical safety checklist powered by AI.

Dr Ahanthem Santa Singh, Executive Director, AIIMS Bibinagar, applauded the initiative: “This collaboration marks a critical step toward integrating frontline clinical insights with cutting-edge AI technologies to build impactful, scalable solutions.”

Prof Bapi Raju, Head of Cognitive Sciences, IIITH, noted, “MedCare AI Impact Hackathon is a living example of how deep tech and clinical practice can come together to solve India’s unique healthcare challenges.”

Satish Kathirisetti, Chief MedTech Mentor, CIE, emphasised, “We are empowering doctors and innovators to co-develop tools that can reshape public health outcomes through practical, field-ready technology.”
