The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has achieved a significant medical milestone by introducing India’s first portable bedside Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system.
This groundbreaking ultra-low-field device is designed to be wheeled directly to a patient’s bedside, allowing for rapid brain imaging of critically ill individuals in intensive care units (ICUs), emergency settings and neurosurgical wards. By bringing the scanner to the patient, the facility eliminates the need for potentially risky transfers to conventional, stationary MRI suites, which is particularly beneficial for patients who are unstable or require mechanical ventilation.
Currently in use at the Centre for Neurological Conditions under the leadership of Dr. Shailesh Gaikwad, the system is already enhancing clinical workflows. Clinicians anticipate that this point-of-care technology will lead to faster decision-making in emergencies, such as stroke management, head trauma assessment, and post-operative monitoring.
By streamlining diagnostic procedures and reducing delays, the portable MRI system is expected to improve outcomes for paediatric and adult patients alike, while also strengthening neurodiagnostic research across the country.
