The Department of Surgical Oncology at Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS Delhi, has officially launched an advanced robotic surgery program using the da Vinci surgical system.
During the pilot phase, the department successfully performed around 100 surgeries, reflecting both clinical confidence and strong patient demand for this precise surgical technology. The program is supported by five trained surgeons performing a wide range of complex cancer surgeries involving the rectum, esophagus, pancreas, urology, and gynecologic cancers.
The da Vinci system enhances surgeons’ ability to perform demanding procedures, such as very low rectal surgeries, Whipple’s procedures for pancreatic cancer, and advanced chest operations. With this technology, the department can now tackle some of the most challenging cancer surgeries with greater precision.
All robotic surgeries under this program are provided free of charge, ensuring access for patients from all sections of society. Patients also benefit from smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less pain, faster recovery, and fewer complications.
Dr. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, highlighted that introducing robotic-assisted surgery aligns with the hospital’s mission to expand access to advanced healthcare. He noted the rising cancer cases in India and the growing need for precision-driven treatments. “By offering these surgeries free of cost, AIIMS Delhi is removing financial barriers and making advanced cancer care available in a high-volume government hospital,” Dr. Srinivas said.
Dr. Sunil Kumar, Head of the Department of Surgical Oncology, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS Delhi, emphasized the transformative impact of robotic-assisted surgery for both patients and surgeons. “The da Vinci system gives surgeons enhanced visibility, control, and accuracy, while patients experience better outcomes and quicker recovery,” he said.
Looking ahead, the department plans to document surgical outcomes, contribute to research, and share knowledge with the wider surgical community. Combining high patient volumes with advanced technology, AIIMS Delhi’s Surgical Oncology department aims to set new benchmarks in cancer surgery and improve treatment standards nationwide.
