AIIMS Raipur has completed 100 robotic-assisted surgeries within four months of launching its robotic surgery programme, marking a major milestone in the adoption of advanced surgical technology in public healthcare in Central India. The programme, started in August 2025, has made AIIMS Raipur the first government hospital in Central India to offer robotic-assisted surgery. It’s aimed to expand access to minimally invasive procedures for patients from Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states.

Milestone in Robotic Surgery Programme

According to the institute, the 100 procedures were completed in a short span, reflecting rapid clinical adoption and strong patient demand for minimally invasive options. The robotic platform has been used for a wide spectrum of surgeries, including nephrectomy, cystectomy, hemicolectomy, prostatectomy, pyeloplasty, hernia repair, gastrectomy and hysterectomy, covering both urology and general surgery as well as gastrointestinal and gynaecological cases.

Training-Led Rollout and Multidisciplinary Team

A total of five surgeons at AIIMS Raipur have been trained on the da Vinci robotic system, supported by round-the-clock access to simulation-based training modules that have helped shorten the learning curve and improve surgical efficiency. The programme is being run by a multidisciplinary team involving general surgery, urology, obstetrics and gynaecology, and anaesthesia, ensuring coordinated perioperative care and consistent case selection.

Patient Benefits and Operational Gains

Executive Director Dr Ashok Jindal said completing 100 robotic surgeries in a short time underlines the team’s disciplined approach and focus on high-quality care, noting that patients are experiencing smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery. Professor Debajyoti Mohanty, Head of General Surgery, highlighted that robotic technology has enabled the hospital to manage more cases per day and cut waiting times, especially for general surgery patients, without compromising safety.

Strengthening a Regional Centre of Excellence

AIIMS Raipur said this milestone reinforces its position as a regional centre of excellence for robotic-assisted surgery within the public sector. By combining advanced technology with structured surgeon training and a public tertiary-care setting, the institute aims to build a sustainable robotic surgery ecosystem that benefits complex as well as routine surgical patients across Central India.
