American Oncology Institute (AOI) has opened Manipur’s first-ever Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit in collaboration with Babina Specialty Hospital in Khabeisoi, Imphal East. The state-of-the-art facility will cater not only to patients in Manipur but also to neighbouring states, significantly enhancing access to advanced haematology and oncology treatments in Northeast India.
The inaugural event was graced by Dr Chambo Gonmei, Director of Health Services, Government of Manipur, as the Chief Guest, along with Dr N Hemantakumar, Director of Family Welfare Services, Government of Manipur, as the Guest of Honour, and Dr Dhabali Thangjam, CMD, Babina Groups, as the President of the occasion.
Dr Gonmei emphasised the importance of this development, stating, “The establishment of a Bone Marrow Transplant unit in Manipur is a transformative step for healthcare in the Northeast. This will ensure timely and specialised treatment for patients battling blood cancers and other haematological conditions, reinforcing our commitment to making advanced medical care accessible within the state.”
Along with BMT, Nuclear Scans (Gamma Scans) and Iodine Therapy for Thyroid Cancer, which was previously only available in Guwahati, can now be accessed at AOI Imphal. This is another step forward in reducing dependence on hospitals outside the state and bringing cutting-edge cancer care to Manipur.
Dr Hemantakumar mentioned, “Access to quality Cancer Care has been a challenge for many in Manipur and neighbouring states. This BMT unit at AOI Imphal will drastically reduce treatment burdens on families, providing them with cutting-edge medical expertise closer to home.”
Dr Thangjam remarked, “Babina Specialty Hospital and AOI Imphal have been at the forefront of elevating cancer treatment standards in the Northeast. This initiative is aimed at making high-quality medical treatment more affordable and accessible to people in the region. Cancer treatment should not be a privilege reserved only for those who can afford to travel to major cities.”
Harish Trivedi, CEO, CTSI-South Asia, said, “We are confident that this facility will be a game-changer, offering new hope and life-saving treatment to patients across Manipur and neighbouring states, eliminating the need to travel far for advanced care."
