Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore, has become the first hospital in India to receive both the Comprehensive Stroke Center and Comprehensive Chest Pain Center certifications from the American Heart Association® (AHA), marking a major milestone in emergency care for two of the country’s most time-critical conditions. These dual certifications recognise the hospital’s ability to deliver rapid, coordinated and evidence-based care to patients presenting with suspected stroke or acute heart attack, from arrival in the emergency department through diagnosis, intervention and critical care.
Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and the fifth leading cause of disability in India, while cardiovascular disease accounts for nearly 36% of all deaths among adults aged 30- 69 years. As the burden of these conditions continues to rise, improving hospital preparedness and reducing the time taken to diagnose and treat patients have become critical to survival and recovery. Karnataka is estimated to have around 500,000 people living with stroke, placing considerable pressure on its healthcare system. Apollo Hospitals’ Health of the Nation 2026 report further found that 45% of asymptomatic individuals who underwent coronary calcium scoring already showed evidence of coronary artery calcification, underlining how serious heart disease often develops silently until an emergency occurs.
Against this backdrop, the AHA’s dual certification follows an independent, rigorous evaluation of Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore’s readiness to manage patients with suspected stroke or acute heart attack. The assessment covers the entire emergency pathway from triage and initial clinical evaluation to imaging, interventions in the cath lab or stroke unit, and subsequent intensive care and rehabilitation planning. For both stroke and acute heart attack, every minute can influence survival and long-term recovery, making emergency preparedness as crucial as access to specialised treatment.

The Comprehensive Stroke Center certification recognises hospitals equipped to manage complex stroke cases through advanced neuroimaging, specialised neurological expertise, emergency interventions such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy, and continuous monitoring in dedicated stroke units. The Comprehensive Chest Pain Center certification acknowledges hospitals that can rapidly identify and treat acute coronary syndromes, including ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), where restoring blood flow at the earliest is critical to limiting heart muscle damage and improving survival.
