Integrates hands-on surgical and academic training sets a new standard in nurturing future eye care leaders
ASG Eye Hospital celebrated the convocation of specialist surgeons from its unique immersive Fellowship Programme. The event celebrated the culmination of a prestigious Fellowship Programme designed not just to train, but also to prepare the next generation of leaders in ophthalmology through a unique blend of immersive surgical training, rigorous academic mentorship and a structured environment where skill meets compassion.
The comprehensive, two-year programme has successfully transformed postgraduate ophthalmologists into highly skilled specialists in complex fields like Vitreo-Retina, Phacoemulsification, and Refractive Surgery. This initiative is pivotal in elevating eye care standards across India, a nation where an estimated 28 crore people suffer from varying degrees of sight loss, with causes ranging from uncorrected refractive errors to cataract, and from glaucoma to corneal opacity. By training specialist eye doctors, ASG aims to tackle the deep-rooted disparity in advanced care between metropolitan centers and smaller cities and towns.
The ASG Fellowship Programme, which typically runs for 24 months, is based on total immersion by the Fellows who are integrated into high-volume clinical and surgical environments, performing a significant number of advanced procedures under the direct, one-on-one mentorship of ASG’s senior consultants. The fellowship programme started from Jodhpur under mentorship of Dr Mayank Sharma who currently is the chief operating officer for the western region (Rajasthan). Dr Kaushik Tripathy who heads the ICMR approved Ethics committee for research and trial, has had several research papers published in more than 250 international publications.
Dr Arun Singhvi, Chairman and Managing Director, ASG Eye Hospitals, said, “This convocation is representative of our investment in the future of ophthalmology and in turn, the future of India. We are not just training surgeons; we are cultivating leaders. Each of our Fellows is equipped to be an ambassador of excellence, ready to elevate the standard of eye care wherever they serve. By placing leaders in our 175+ hospitals, we are ensuring that world-class, protocol-driven eye care becomes the norm, not the exception, for every single patient.”
“We sincerely believe that confidence in surgical leadership is built through this guided repetition and expert mentorship. Our fellows gain extensive surgical exposure, work directly with senior mentors, and engage in research and outreach — helping them transition seamlessly from learners to independent, ethical practitioners. This initiative not only advances ophthalmic excellence but also strengthens India’s eye-care ecosystem by producing specialists who are ready to serve with skill, empathy, and integrity in every corner of the country.” — Dr. Ganesh Pillay, Chief Academics and Research and Regional COO (Central India), Director – ASG Fellowship Programme, ASG Eye Hospitals. He was honoured with the prestigious title of “Ophthalmologist of the Year“ (West) 2025.
