Aster MIMS launches field hospital for COVID-19 patients in Kozhikode

The facility with the first 25 beds was built and made operational in 5 days and started admitting patients today

Aster MIMS Hospital at Kozhikode constructed a field hospital within five days and commenced operations. The makeshift hospital is exclusive to COVID-19 patients. This is the first time a field hospital has been set up in Kerala as part of the COVID-19 defence. 

The field hospital is equipped with a 50-bed ventilator, bi-pop and oxygen facilities exclusively for COVID-19 patients. The most notable feature is that the facility was built in just five days with the first 25 beds that were made operational, today. It is located in the car parking ground near the previously established Makeshift ICU.

“The suggestion by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Health Minister was the impetus for making this idea a reality. In collaboration with Aster Volunteers, free COVID-19 treatment will be provided to needy patients. Efforts and discussions are underway in other districts of Kerala to construct further field hospitals. We have also set up a 50-bed field hospital in New Delhi as a part of our Aster Volunteers programme,” said Dr Azad Moopen, Founder CMD, Aster DM Healthcare.

“Earlier, Aster MIMS was able to accommodate an additional 20 ICU beds with the innovative concept of a Makeshift ICU, with the realization of the field hospital, it was possible to set up seventy beds within a few days, including the ICU and ventilator facility”, said, Farhan Yasin, North Kerala CEO, Aster MIMS.

Though it was planned to be completed within ten days, it was completed in half the time under the leadership of Liju and Sudhir, Head of Engineering. The team led by Biomed Head, Maneesh Madhavanand the team led by CNO Sheelamma worked tirelessly to make the systems, including the ventilator and bi-pap machines, and arrangements of staff nurses a reality within a few days.

The concept and formation of the field hospital are completely led by Dr Venugopalan PP, Head, Emergency Medicine, Aster MIMS.
