In a bid to spread the awareness, every year August 1-7 is observed as “World Breastfeeding Week” The theme for the year 2026 is “Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life: strengthen what works,”

Counselling and education have proven to substantially increase exclusive breastfeeding rates. Following a review of over 16 studies conducted globally by the World Health Organization (WHO) have found breastfeeding rates to have increased by 58%. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, and then continue to breastfeed till 2 years.

According to a journal published in the American Academy of Pediatrics, it has been found that many acute and chronic pediatric disorders, like acute diarrheal disease, lower respiratory illnesses, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), inflammatory bowel disease, childhood leukemia, diabetes mellitus, obesity, asthma, and atopic dermatitis, occur less frequently among children who were breastfed as infants. In addition, mothers who breastfeed have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and various kinds of cancer like -breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancer.

What nutrients does breastmilk contain?

According to UNICEF breastmilk are rich in protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins and all the essential nutrients needed for a new born. The first milk, colostrum, which is rich in antibodies, is the first natural vaccine for a new born when helps to protect the child against infections.

For the first six months of life, health experts recommend exclusive breastfeeding, as breast milk provides complete nutrition required for a baby’s growth. Comprising nearly 80 percent water, it also fulfils a baby’s hydration needs during this crucial stage, eliminating the need for additional water. Every feed becomes far more than nourishment. It offers a sense of familiarity, security and affection that helps babies feel protected while strengthening the unique connection they share with their mothers.

Reinforcing the importance of breastfeeding, Dr. Divyalakshmi V., Lactation Consultant, Sparsh Hospital, Bengaluru, said, “Breastfeeding is more than nourishment. It is warmth, comfort, connection, & love. At the breast, a baby finds not only milk, but also the familiar rhythm of a mother’s heartbeat, the comfort of her touch, and the security of being held close. It’s the beginning of a lifelong bond.”

Dr. Vishal Parmar, Fellow in Neonatology and Consultant Paediatrician, Mumbai, said, “Breast milk is nature’s first and most complete nutrition for every newborn. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months supports immunity, healthy growth and lifelong well-being. With the right guidance and support, every mother can give her baby the healthiest possible start in life.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rajesh Vohra, CEO of Artsana India (Chicco), said, “Every breastfeeding journey is deeply personal. While every mother wants to give her baby the very best, the path often comes with moments of learning, adjustment and perseverance. Over the years, we have had the privilege of listening to thousands of mothers. They simply look for support that understands their everyday realities. At Chicco, our endeavour has always been to create thoughtfully designed products that support mothers through every stage of breastfeeding.”
