Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, recently organized a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training workshop for auto rickshaw drivers as part of its activities leading up to World Heart Day 2025. The initiative aimed to enhance community preparedness for cardiac emergencies and addressed the increasing incidence of heart attacks among younger populations.
The workshop, conducted by Dr. Shashwath Hegde, Emergency Medicine Specialist at Fortis Hospital, trained approximately 200 auto drivers in practical CPR techniques. Participants gained essential skills for timely intervention during cardiac arrests. The session also covered identifying warning signs, assessing emergencies, and providing immediate assistance before professional help arrives.
Dr. Vivek Jawali, Chairman, Cardiac Sciences, Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru, during the health talk emphasized the importance of early recognition and rapid response in improving survival rates. Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, and quick action is vital for survival. He highlighted the unique position of auto drivers, often first on the scene in urban emergencies, to act as first responders. Training them with CPR skills not only empowers the community but also helps bridge the critical gap until professional aid arrives.
Reflecting on the initiative, Dr. Thejaswini Parthasarathy, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, noted that empowering community members such as auto drivers with CPR skills extends the reach of critical emergency care beyond hospital walls. She stated that the effort aligns with World Heart Day’s theme, “Don’t Miss a Beat,” and underlines the hospital’s commitment to building a more prepared and resilient community.
