Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, part of the Fortis Healthcare network, brought together cancer survivors and their families for an emotional celebration of hope and resilience at its ‘Thulir – New Beginnings’ event. The gathering honoured cancer warriors who have overcome their diagnosis and treatment, while reinforcing the importance of early detection and comprehensive cancer care.
Survivors share stories of courage
Around 100 cancer survivors attended the event, sharing powerful stories of their journey from diagnosis to recovery. Participants spoke about the fear and uncertainty that cancer brings, and how timely medical intervention, advances in treatment and a strong support system helped them regain confidence and rebuild their lives.
The forum provided an open and supportive space for survivors to discuss the physical, emotional and social challenges they faced during treatment. Many highlighted the crucial role of family, friends and healthcare professionals in helping them cope with the disease and its aftermath, turning a difficult period into one of learning, strength and renewal.
Leadership voices on early detection and holistic care
The event was inaugurated by Ms E Rajeshwari, Deputy Director of Agriculture and PA to the Collector (Agri), Chengalpattu, who is herself a cancer survivor. Her presence underscored the message that cancer can be overcome and that survivorship is both possible and meaningful with access to appropriate care. She was joined by Ms S Niranjini, COO and Hospital Head, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai, and Dr Balaji Ramani, Director, Gleneagles Institute of Oncology.
“World Cancer Day is a reminder that cancer is not the end of the road. With early diagnosis, advanced treatment options and a patient-centric approach, many cancers are curable today. Hearing survivors share their stories motivates both patients and caregivers to stay hopeful and proactive,” said Dr Balaji Ramani, emphasising the impact of awareness and timely intervention.
Speaking at the event, Ms S Niranjini said, “Thulir represents the invincible human spirit that turns survivors into shining examples of hope. We are thrilled to celebrate their experiences and reiterate our commitment to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for cancer patients at Gleneagles.” Her remarks reflected the hospital’s focus on patient-centred oncology services that extend beyond treatment to emotional and psychosocial support.
Reinforcing the message of World Cancer Day
Aligned with World Cancer Day, the ‘Thulir – New Beginnings’ meet highlighted the importance of community solidarity in the fight against cancer. The programme showcased how survivor-led interactions can inspire newly diagnosed patients and their caregivers to seek care promptly and adhere to recommended treatment plans.
The event concluded with a symbolic gesture of unity, echoing this year’s World Cancer Day message, “United by Unique.” The theme recognises that every cancer journey is different, yet bound together by shared hope, perseverance and the collective will to overcome the disease. Through initiatives like Thulir, Gleneagles Hospital Chennai and the Gleneagles Institute of Oncology aim to strengthen a culture of survivorship, empathy and ongoing support for those impacted by cancer.
