Gleneagles Hospitals Hyderabad achieves a major milestone with over 1,500 successful liver transplants and a 95% survival rate

Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi-ka-pul, has set a new benchmark in liver transplantation by surpassing 1,500 successful liver transplants over the past 15 years, with a survival rate exceeding 95 percent. This milestone reflects the hospital’s leadership in both adult laparoscopic donor surgeries and pediatric liver transplantation, making it one of the foremost liver transplant centers in India.

At the forefront of this success is a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Vishal K. Chorasiya, Head of HPB and Lead Liver Transplant Surgeon, who has personally performed more than 2,500 liver transplant surgeries. He is supported by surgeons Dr. Manikanteshwar Rao D and Dr. Tharun Gattu, hepatologists Dr. Kavya Dendukuri and Dr. Sameer Kumar Godey, transplant intensivists Dr. Ganesh Chowhan and Dr. Kartika Balaji, anesthetist Dr. Varsha CH, and transplant radiologist Dr. Uma Karri.

Laparoscopic Donor Surgery: A Game-Changer for Adult Donors

A key milestone for the hospital is the introduction of Pure Laparoscopic Donor Hepatectomy for adult living donors. This minimally invasive procedure uses small incisions and advanced surgical instruments, reducing pain, scarring, and hospital stay while enabling faster recovery.

“At Gleneagles Hospitals, our focus is to honor the generosity of adult donors by making the procedure as safe and comfortable as possible,” said Dr. Vishal K. Chorasiya. “Donor safety remains our top priority.”

Dr. Ganesh Chowhan added that the hospital’s investment in advanced minimally invasive techniques has expanded access to living donor transplants and reduced waitlist times for adults facing end-stage liver disease.

Mr. Bharath Kanth Reddy, Regional CEO, Gleneagles Hospitals (Fortis Network), Chennai & Hyderabad, emphasized the commitment to comprehensive transplant care, saying, “By combining laparoscopic donor surgery for adults with our specialized pediatric liver transplant program, we bring hope to entire families during their most challenging times.”

Mr. Anil Vinayak, Group COO, Fortis Healthcare Limited, highlighted that these outcomes reflect Fortis’ ongoing investment in technology, talent and infrastructure to sustain high standards of clinical excellence across its network.

Specialization in Pediatric Liver Transplants

Gleneagles Hospitals has built a comprehensive pediatric liver transplant program, treating complex conditions such as biliary atresia, metabolic liver disease, and acute liver failure. The center has become one of the leading pediatric transplant facilities in the country.

“Pediatric liver transplant surgery demands a different level of precision—tiny vessels, fragile tissues, and limited physiologic reserve,” explained Dr. Kavya Dendukuri, Pediatric Hepatologist. The team performs highly specialized procedures such as monosegment graft transplants for infants, ensuring tailored surgical care for each child.

Dr. Tharun Gattu, Liver Transplant Surgeon, noted that living donor transplantation for children allows surgeons to operate at an optimal time before liver failure becomes irreversible. Many young patients recover fully, returning to normal activities and school life.

World-Class Infrastructure and Multidisciplinary Care

The hospital’s transplant program is supported by cutting-edge infrastructure, including modular operation theatres, a dedicated Liver Intensive Care Unit, advanced radiology and blood bank facilities, and a specialized transplant coordination team.

“Liver transplantation is not just surgery—it is a comprehensive process that extends from evaluation to lifelong follow-up,” said Dr. Manikanteshwar Rao D. “Our multidisciplinary approach ensures every patient and donor receives precise, compassionate care.”

Each donor undergoes thorough evaluation to ensure complete safety, and the hospital adheres to rigorous infection control protocols and international transplant guidelines at every stage.
