The National Health Authority (NHA) has integrated Google’s latest open-source AI model, Gemma 4, and its Medical Data Toolkit into the recently launched Aarogya Setu 2.0 app, ushering in a new phase for India’s digital public health infrastructure. The upgraded app will help users convert unstructured medical reports into comprehensive, standardised digital profiles of their health history and care journey.
With Gemma 4 built into Aarogya Setu 2.0, the app can automatically identify the type of health record and extract key clinical information- from lab test names and methods to results- from both text and images. This data is then mapped into Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), a globally accepted format that allows different healthcare systems to share digital health records seamlessly and securely. The NHA expects this to significantly smooth the transfer of patient information across hospitals, clinics and other healthcare providers.
The collaboration forms part of a broader effort by the NHA and Google to strengthen India’s Digital Public Infrastructure for healthcare. Google has also open-sourced the Medical Data Toolkit, making it freely available to developers and health-tech innovators. The company says this will lower barriers to digitising and standardising legacy health records while ensuring compliance with interoperability standards set under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). The initial version of the toolkit is optimised for commonly used records such as laboratory reports and clinical observations.
