Govt allows Ayurveda practitioners to conduct surgeries

Students will be trained in two streams of surgery and would be awarded titles of MS (Ayurveda) shalya tantra general surgery and MS (Ayurveda) shalakya tantra

Government of India in a recent notification has allowed post graduate degree holders of Ayurveda to perform general surgical, ENT, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and dental procedures. A gazette notification dated November 19, 2020, by Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) allowed Ayurvedic post graduate pass outs to receive formal training for such procedures. The notification further stated that the amendments were being made with the sanction of the central government.

Students will be trained in two streams of surgery and would be awarded titles of MS (Ayurveda) shalya tantra general surgery and MS (Ayurveda) shalakya tantra (disease of eye, ear, nose, throat, head and oral dentistry).

“Postgraduate courses in surgery, ENT and ophthalmology have been there in ayurveda since 20-25 years and we have always had surgical OPDs… No one had looked into the legality of what has been happening for decades. So, after consultation with the ministry and Niti Aayog, it was decided to put it down in writing to make it clear that what is already being done is legal,” explained Dr Jayant Deopujari, President, CCIM.

Dr P Raghu Ram, President, Association of Surgeons of India said, “General surgery is a part and parcel of modern medical science which cannot be mainstreamed with Ayurveda. Introducing training modules to the postgraduate curriculum of Ayurvedic studies leading to titles such as MS (Ayurveda can potentially disrupt and jeopardise the basic standards of care and safety of patients.”
