HCG Cancer Hospital accelerates Tanzania’s healthcare services

Performs bone marrow transplant

HCG Cancer Hospital in collaboration with Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania has performed the first bone marrow transplant (BMT) and set up an advanced BMT unit in the region of East Africa. The association aims at strengthening health care facilities and bringing world-class excellence to the patients in Tanzania. An autologous stem cell transplantation was performed on five patients aged between 34 to 55 years who were suffering from multiple myeloma. In this disease, an autologous transplant can nearly double the cancer-free period for patients and increase the quality of life.

With the launch of this facility, HCG hospitals becomes the first institution in the region to provide a standalone dedicated facility for bone marrow transplantation. This collaboration is in line with India’s support to Tanzania in developing a self-sustainable healthcare service model and help in easy accessibility of the medical treatment for the citizens without having to travel to other countries. As a part of this collaboration, specialists from HCG Cancer Hospitals, India will be visiting Muhimbili National Hospital to perform complicated BMT procedures and train and empower medical professionals in Muhimbili National Hospital to treat patients suffering from blood-related disorders. Collaborative training and knowledge sharing have led to this successful endeavour.

Dr BS Ajaikumar, Executive Chairman, Healthcare Global Enterprises said, “Given the installation of this advanced BMT unit, Tanzania will now be able to effectively address the growing incidence of cancer cases in the region. Patients requiring bone marrow transplants will no longer need to travel out of the country for treatment. HCG will extend its world-class healthcare services to enhance the quality and sustainability of cancer care in Tanzania, primarily through early detection and targeted therapies. Given the high clinical acumen of our haematologists coupled with our best-in-class infrastructure, HCG delivers the best outcomes of bone marrow treatment at the most affordable cost.”

Dr Sachin Jadhav, Group Head-Haematology & BMT Department, HCG Cancer Hospital, Bengaluru, said, “The BMT unit here will be a boon to patients affected with thalassemia, leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and other such diseases and raise their overall quality of life. The whole procedure of bone marrow transplant needs meticulous planning. Our new bone marrow unit will take care of the patient’s pre-transplant evaluations, conditioning chemotherapy, stem cell infusion, as well as long-term monitoring after the transplant.”

Prof Lawrence Museru, Executive Director, Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania said, “The state-of-art BMT unit will offer best facilities to patients throughout the treatment from evaluation and preparation to the transplant followed by long-term monitoring after the transplant. The bone marrow transplant can now be performed at affordable costs, while earlier a patient would spend Sh250 million to get a bone marrow treatment outside the country but at the MNH, one pays about Sh70 million by now saving at least Sh180 million. This brings new hope to patients battling cancer cells. We are fortunate to have this facility supported by expert specialists from HCG Cancer Hospitals, India.”
