The episode focussed on imparting insights into indications, biomechanics, and surgical and prosthetic techniques in zygomatic implants

ICPA Health Products (ICPA) hosted its latest episode on simplifying the subject of Zygomatic Implants in dental practice. As the guest speaker, the 19th episode had Dr Sankalp Mittal, MDS (OMFS) deep dive into various aspects of the specialised dental treatment including the selection of zygomatic implants, selection of the right techniques and discussion on cases. The episode focussed on imparting insights into indications, biomechanics, and surgical and prosthetic techniques in zygomatic implants.

Zygomatic or zygoma implants are used for the rehabilitation of the upper jaw and they differ from conventional dental implants, in that they anchor into the zygomatic bone also called the cheekbone, rather than the maxilla or upper jaw bone. Zygomatic implants may be used when the maxillary bone is of poor quality or inadequate quantity for the placement of conventional dental implants.

Dentist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon and implantologist from Jaipur, Dr Sankalp Mittal has extensively practised in the field of zygomatic implants for over 13 years. In the episode, Dr Mittal threw light on the boon that zygomatic implants have extended in the rehabilitation of atrophic or resected upper jaw bones. With his extensive work in the rehabilitation of mucormycosis-affected upper jaws during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Mittal answered all queries asked by dentists.

He informed participants about the evolution of chairside zygomatic implant techniques that are gradually becoming a popular treatment choice. The online episode also had Dr Amol Thorat, a well-known implantologist from Pune as a guest panellist. For the benefit of dentists who may have missed out, the session is available across ICPA’s various social media platforms, including YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn.

‘ICPA Clinical Series’ is an initiative to address specific clinical challenges dentists face in their everyday practice. Themed ‘Each Episode – One Clinical Challenge’, the series is moderated by ICPA’s Head of Research & Innovations – Dr Rajeev Chitguppi. Each session in the series has a guest speaker chosen from specialists from various domains of dentistry.
