Jupiter Hospital has implemented India’s first healthcare deployment of Johnson Controls India’s Chiller Plant Optimiser (CPO), introducing artificial intelligence into a critical but often overlooked area of hospital infrastructure: cooling systems. The move marks a significant step toward smarter, more resilient hospital operations that prioritise both clinical safety and energy efficiency.
Cooling systems in hospitals do far more than provide comfort; they sustain the precise temperature, humidity and air quality required by operation theatres, ICUs, blood banks, pharmacies and imaging suites. Stable cooling is also vital for the reliable performance of sensitive diagnostic equipment such as MRI and CT scanners. Any interruption can disrupt clinical workflows, compromise medication storage and affect infection-control environments.
Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems account for 40- 60% of a hospital’s total energy consumption, with the chiller plant alone responsible for up to 35% of electricity use. To address this, the AI-driven CPO integrates and automatically controls the entire chiller ecosystem- chillers, primary pumps, condenser pumps and cooling towers- using real-time adaptive controls that continuously tune equipment performance to match cooling demand and ambient conditions.
Hospital cooling demand varies widely through the day, rising to 450–500 TR (tonnes of refrigeration) during peak hours and dropping to 220- 250 TR at night. Traditionally, plant performance matching has required frequent manual intervention. The CPO automates these adjustments, enabling the plant to operate at a claimed efficiency of 0.72- 0.75 kW/TR while maintaining precise environmental conditions.
The platform delivers real-time visibility into plant operations and power consumption, allowing engineering teams to monitor performance remotely, receive control updates and track operational changes instantly. Every optimisation decision made by the AI server generates notifications and control messages, providing transparency and traceability for maintenance and audit purposes.
Compared with conventional manual controls, Johnson Controls India’s Chiller Plant Optimiser is expected to reduce chiller plant energy consumption by 15- 20%. Jupiter Hospital estimates this will translate into an annual avoidance of approximately 127,500 kg of CO₂ emissions, supporting the hospital’s sustainability and ESG objectives.
“In a hospital environment, cooling isn’t a comfort system; it’s a clinical infrastructure,” said Neelesh Shinde, Group Chief Technical Officer & Head- Projects, Jupiter Hospital. “Patient safety, infection control and the performance of critical medical equipment depend on stable temperature and humidity conditions. The AI-driven Chiller Plant Optimiser enables real-time adaptive control across the cooling ecosystem, helping us maintain these conditions while improving energy efficiency and operational reliability.
Shinde added that the system continuously analyses plant behaviour, identifies performance deviations and enables faster corrective action. He noted that the CPO’s fully on-premises architecture keeps operational data within the hospital network, addressing cybersecurity concerns while delivering AI-driven optimisation. “As hospitals move toward smarter infrastructure, technologies such as predictive maintenance, digital twins and self-learning systems will play an increasingly important role in improving resilience and sustainability,” he said.
