As part of a deep-rooted commitment to providing the best possible healthcare to the region, KIMS Hospital, Thane, has officially launched the city’s very first VELYS Robotic System. By bringing this advanced, 4th-generation robotic assistant into the operating room, the hospital aims to help surgeons navigate complex surgeries more accurately, ensuring patients receive the highest standard of minimally invasive care available today.
Rather than replacing the surgeon, the VELYS system acts as an extension of their own hands. Operating from an ergonomic console that provides a magnified, 3D high-definition view of the surgical area, surgeons guide dynamic robotic arms. These arms translate the doctor’s natural hand movements into highly precise micro-movements, which helps reduce surgical trauma and supports a smoother recovery for patients.
The hospital recently celebrated the system’s arrival by gathering surgical teams and staff together to see the technology in action. For the surgical team at KIMS Hospital Thane, the technology offers practical, day-to-day benefits that directly impact how they operate.
Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Chief of Orthopaedics & HOD of Joint Replacement, pointed out how the system’s precision and accuracy aids in recovery: “Because the system translates our hand movements so accurately, we can minimize the impact on surrounding tissue,” he said. “That careful approach is a key factor in helping our patients heal and get back on their feet sooner. Robotic assisted surgery not only helps in excellent outcomes but it also enhances patient’s satisfaction.”
Dr. Swapnil Zambare, Consultant Arthroscopy , highlighted the mechanical flexibility the robot provides:
“The multi-arm design gives us a range of motion that is incredibly helpful. It allows us to navigate tight anatomical spaces steadily and consistently, which is crucial when we are working through complex procedures.”
From a procedural standpoint, Dr. Sarang Deshpande, Consultant Orthopedics & Joint Replacement, appreciates the supportive design of the equipment: “The 3D high-definition vision gives us such a clear, immersive view of the anatomy. Plus, the console is designed ergonomically, which genuinely helps reduce the physical fatigue we often experience during lengthy surgeries.”
Ultimately, the focus remains on the people undergoing the procedures. As Dr. Mrinal Prakash, Consultant Orthopaedics (Joint Replacement & Sports Injury Specialist), noted: “Our main goal with adopting any new technology is improving the patient’s experience.
