Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has reportedly named her niece Claire Mazumdar as successor

Biocon founder and chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has reportedly identified her niece, Claire Mazumdar, as the successor to lead the company’s next phase. The succession plan comes as the biotechnology major prepares for a future shaped by advances in biotechnology, biosimilars and artificial intelligence.

According to an interview with Fortune India, Mazumdar-Shaw said she wants to ensure Biocon is “put in good hands” and believes Claire has already demonstrated her ability to run a company. Claire Mazumdar, 37, is currently the founder and CEO of Bicara Therapeutics.

The report also notes that Claire’s background includes experience at Third Rock Ventures and Rheos Medicines. Mazumdar-Shaw reportedly pointed to other family members in the broader support network, including Claire’s brother Eric Mazumdar, a professor at California Institute of Technology, and her husband Thomas Roberts, who is associated with Massachusetts General Hospital.

The succession update comes alongside a broader restructuring at Biocon. Shreehas Tambe has taken over as CEO and managing director of Biocon Biologics, while Siddharth Mittal is set to lead Syngene International from July 1.

Biocon’s growth strategy will focus on differentiated biosimilars, original biologic therapies and deeper use of artificial intelligence in research and development, the report said.
