Meitra Hospital performs bone marrow transplant on myeloma patient

The transplant was done in a hepa-filtered and positive pressure BMT suites room

Dr Ragesh R Nair and his team from haemato oncology and bone marrow of Meitra Hospital, Calicut, successfully conducted a bone marrow transplant of a 56-year-old lady. The patient was diagnosed with multiple myeloma three months ago. After undergoing chemotherapy, the symptoms got subsided and she underwent a bone marrow transplant. The transplant was done in a hepa-filtered and positive pressure BMT suites room while maintaining stringent infection control protocols, thereby accelerating the recovery rate of the patient.

“BMT is an important therapy in the management of patients with blood cancers like myeloma, leukaemia, lymphoma and certain non-cancerous blood disorders. The science and art of BMT has evolved to such an extent that even older patients can now be taken up for BMT successfully. This transplant in the 56-year-old patient had certain peculiar manifestation known as auto graft versus host disease during the course, which was successfully dealt with,” said Dr Ragesh R Nair, Director- Haemato Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant, Meitra Hospital.
