Men account for 4 in 10 mental health consultations, with rising stress, anxiety, and workplace pressure driving more diagnoses- Maarga Mind Care

A new Maarga Mind Care report indicates that mental health concerns among men are rising steadily, especially among younger adults, pointing to a growing crisis. The analysis shows that men now account for 4 in 10 mental health consultations, with the highest number of cases seen among Gen Z adults aged 19-25 years, followed by those aged 26-35 years.

Most consultations are linked to sleep issues and substance abuse, with many patients later diagnosed with anxiety, depression, psychosis, and schizophrenia after assessment. The report also highlights the prevalence of chronic stress, noting that nearly half of male patients experience prolonged stress without recognising it as a mental health concern, often dismissing symptoms until they begin affecting their personal and professional lives.

Workplace pressure remains a major trigger, with 40% of diagnosed male patients seeking help for work-related stress, underscoring the emotional toll of demanding environments and the need for earlier intervention. The findings also suggest a shift in attitudes toward men’s mental health, with 80% of male patients seeking support for the first time, reflecting a gradual break from long-standing stigma around mental well-being.

This trend aligns with broader national concerns. Data from the National Mental Health Survey (NMHS) by NIMHANS shows that 1 in 10 Indians currently lives with a mental health disorder, while anxiety disorders affect millions, highlighting the need for timely recognition, open conversations, and accessible support.

Dr. Jothi Neeraja, Founder, Chairwoman & MD, People Tree Hospitals & Maarga Mind Care said, “Generally, men look for assistance when the emotional burden starts hampering their ability to function normally in their personal or professional life. We have observed that 50%-60% of the men seeking help experience stress-related symptoms but are often unaware that these issues are connected to their mental well-being.”

According to Dr. Krutika Ainapur, Senior Consultant- Adult Psychiatrist & Sexologist, Maarga Mind Care, “This rising trend among young men seeking consultation is certainly a sign of good news for discussions on mental health. However, there are several diseases affecting men, regardless of age, including anxiety, depression and workplace stress. Identifying these problems and providing necessary treatment becomes vital here.”

The findings underline the need for greater attention to men’s mental health, which is often overlooked due to stigma and social pressure. With nearly half of male patients reportedly suffering from comorbid anxiety and depression, integrating mental health care into routine healthcare remains essential.
