The incidence of environmental allergies and gut health disorders is increasing at a rapid pace and continues to be a significant public health concern in Bengaluru and around the world, affecting quality of life, workplace productivity and overall well-being, according to Dr. Kushal Banerjee, a leading homeopathic physician and researcher.
Current estimates suggest that 20- 30% of Indians experience allergic rhinitis, with residents of metropolitan cities such as Bengaluru particularly vulnerable due to increased exposure to environmental allergens and pollutants.
Known for its rapid urban expansion, increasing vehicular emissions, year-round pollen exposure and extensive construction activity, Bengaluru presents a unique set of environmental triggers that can contribute to allergic and respiratory conditions. Healthcare experts note that changing climatic patterns, air pollution and evolving lifestyles are contributing to a growing prevalence of chronic allergic and gastrointestinal disorders among urban populations.
Studies have shown that approximately 55% of employees report active symptoms of allergic rhinitis, experiencing an average of 52.5 symptomatic days each year. Beyond common symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion and itchy eyes, persistent allergies can contribute to sleep disturbances, fatigue, impaired concentration and reduced workplace productivity. Given Bengaluru’s large professional workforce and fast-paced work environment, these conditions can significantly affect daily functioning and quality of life.
The burden of respiratory illness is equally significant. More than 34 million Indians are estimated to be living with asthma, making India one of the countries with the highest asthma burdens globally. Economic analyses estimate that asthma contributes to an annual burden of approximately INR 71 billion (USD 7 billion) through direct medical expenses and productivity losses. Research further indicates that allergic rhinitis-related ‘presenteeism’ can result in an average of 2.3 hours of reduced productivity during each workday.
Gut health disorders are also becoming increasingly prevalent in urban populations. Conditions including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), lactose intolerance, chronic constipation and functional diarrhoea have been associated with reduced quality of life and have broader impacts on immune function, sleep and overall health. Experts suggest that factors such as stress, dietary changes, sedentary lifestyles and disrupted routines common in metropolitan settings may further influence gut health.
