Padma Shri awardee Dr Ishwar Chandra Verma passes away

He also set up the country’s first registry for genetic disorders

Padma Shri awardee Dr Ishwar Chandra Verma, advisor at the Institute of Medical Genetics and Genomics in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, recently passed away. Dr Verma has gone on to become the only doctor from Delhi to win the country’s fourth-highest civilian award in 2023.

Dr Verma is a renowned specialist in genetic medicine and has been working at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for many years now.
After practising for one and a half years in medicine in East Africa, he acquired training in paediatric and genetics from London.

He also set up the country’s first registry for genetic disorders and played a pivotal role in making advanced genetic tests accessible and affordable through indigenous methods. His career was adorned with numerous accolades, the most prestigious being the Padma Shri in 2023 and the BC Roy National Award in 1983.
