Patient Safety: The Need of the Hour

Surya Hospital in association with McMaster Children’s Hospital, Canada organized 2 days’ workshop to discuss and train doctors on Patient Safety and Quality Improvement in Newborn and Pediatric Care. Maharashtra Health Minister Dr. Deepak Sawant inaugurated the workshop at Pune. Surya Hospital to train doctors & paramedical staff of neonatal care units.

Pediatricians, Neonatologists, Obstetricians, Doctors from other specialties, Resident doctors attended the 2 days’ workshop being conducted by five eminent guest faculties from McMaster Children’s Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

The greatest risk of childhood death occurs during the neonatal period, which extends from birth through the first month of life. About 60 percent of all deaths to children under age 5 and nearly two-thirds of infant deaths (birth to 12 months) occur during the neonatal period. Infections are the major cause of mortality and morbidity in infants under 3 months of age. The widespread availability of antibiotics and their indiscriminate and inappropriate use contribute to this problem, along with poor infection-control practices in hospitals.

Dr. Bhupendra S. Avasthi, Founder & Managing Director, Surya Mother & Childcare said “lakhs of children & adults experienced an adverse event in Hospital. According to a Canadian study; 9% of children experience adverse events out of which 40 percent are preventable. During this workshop we ensure doctors all across would be given a proper training of Patient Safety and Quality Improvement in Newborn and Pediatric Care.”

“Surya Hospital will work closely with Govt of Maharashtra for training doctors, paramedical staff of Special Newborn Care Units (SNCU’s).  Also guide various nursing home & hospitals to provide a better health facility and minimize adverse events, handling difficult patients & families, improving handover between charges of shifts which are the common issues today.” said Dr Sachin Shah, Pediatrician & Neonatologist at Surya Hospital, Pune.

Maharashtra Health Minister Dr. Deepak Sawant said “Surya Hospital with McMaster Children’s Hospital, Canada came tighter and initiated Patient safety guideline workshop. Such training program are beneficial for doctor & hospitals. Hospital infection can increase stay of patient, which are small issues and require to be highlighted. Such education series are very important to train paramedical staff. Till now there are 6 private hospitals are helping Govt of Maharashtra to reach out and train doctor all across.”

Dr Madan Roy, Deputy Chief, McMaster Children’s Hospital, Canada said “We are thankful to Surya Hospital for giving us an opportunity to train doctors & paramedic staff helping them recognize & prevent mistakes, medical error that can occurs during hospital stay.  We attempt to make hospital environment safe & help patient to get good care without any adverse events.”
