A recent trial shows psilocybin-assisted therapy may offer new hope for patients with treatment-resistant depression.

Compass Pathways has reported that its experimental therapy using COMP360, a psilocybin-based compound, achieved its primary endpoint in a late-stage trial. The therapy involved administering a 25-milligram dose alongside psychological support to individuals with treatment-resistant depression patients who had previously not responded to at least two types of antidepressants.

According to The Economic Times, the results showed a measurable reduction in depressive symptoms or full remission over a six-week period, based on a standardized depression scale. This outcome may offer a potential pathway for addressing a condition that has limited treatment options and persistent clinical challenges. While the therapy has shown positive clinical signals, Compass Pathways saw a 24% decline in share value in premarket trading, possibly reflecting market expectations around broader regulatory or commercial considerations.

The findings suggest a shift in how mental health conditions could be approached in the future, especially for patients who have exhausted conventional treatments.
