Building on the growing momentum of patient-led healthcare initiatives, a dedicated ‘Lupus Patient Support Group’ was launched in Ahmedabad, strengthening support systems for individuals living with complex autoimmune diseases.
The initiative follows sustained awareness efforts, with the ‘Lupus Patient Support Group’ formed by the Rheumatology Association of Gujarat (RAG) and supported by Antardhwani. Around 150 participants took part in meaningful interactions with experts who discussed how lupus affects immune function, inflammation, and multiple organ systems, along with its broader impact on overall health, including considerations around women’s health and pregnancy. Together, this initiative reflects an increasing focus on patient education, early diagnosis, and community-driven care.
The Lupus Patient Support Group aims to bring together patients, caregivers, and healthcare experts to provide structured guidance, credible medical information, and emotional support. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks healthy tissues, causing inflammation and damage to organs such as the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain.
“Awareness remains our strongest tool. Many patients present late due to a lack of understanding of early symptoms. Initiatives like this support group help bridge that gap and encourage timely medical intervention,” said Dr. Reena Sharma (President, Rheumatology Association Gujarat).
Common symptoms include a butterfly-shaped facial rash, joint pain, fatigue, photosensitivity, and Raynaud’s phenomenon, causing colour changes in fingers or toes.
The disease predominantly affects women, nearly 90% of cases, typically between the ages of 15 and 44. It is driven by a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors, with triggers such as sunlight, infections, stress, and smoking known to aggravate the condition.
“Lupus is a complex disease with highly variable symptoms, which often leads to delayed diagnosis. Early recognition and consistent monitoring are critical to preventing irreversible organ damage,” said Dr. Anuj Shukla (Secretary, Rheumatology Association Gujarat).
Diagnosis is complex and relies on clinical evaluation supported by tests such as the Antinuclear Antibody (ANA). Delays can lead to complications, including lupus nephritis, cardiovascular disease, lung involvement, and neurological disorders.
While there is no cure, treatment has advanced significantly. Management includes medications such as hydroxychloroquine, NSAIDs, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants, along with lifestyle measures such as sun protection, balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and stress management.
Dr. Vishnu Sharma (Rheumatologist) said, “Lupus requires lifelong management, but with the right treatment and patient awareness, outcomes have improved dramatically. Support systems play a crucial role in helping patients adhere to treatment and maintain quality of life”.
With timely diagnosis and proper care, nearly 85–90% of individuals living with lupus can lead a normal lifespan. The launch marks a significant step towards strengthening patient-centric care and improving awareness around autoimmune diseases in India.
