Dr Sharan Shivaraj Patil joins as President of Indian Society of Hip and Knee Surgeons
He is the Chairman and Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon of Sparsh Hospital
Visionary-Philosopher-Entrepreneur, Chairman and Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, Sparsh Hospital, Dr Sharan Shivaraj Patil has been appointed as President of the Indian Society of Hip and Knee Surgeons (ISHKS) for the year 2023-24. The appointment was made at the 16th Annual Conference ISHKS 2023 held in Hyderabad recently.
As part of his new role, Dr Patil will be driving the objectives of ISHKS – The national organisation to improve and better the standards of practice of the art and science of treating hip and knee diseases. It is an organisation that mirrors in India the great work done by similar organisations in America and Europe to promote the highest level of professional standards in patient care in disorders of hip and knee joints. The illustrious orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sharan Patil has provided surgical interventions to over 5,000 underprivileged patients and has performed over 15,000 surgeries, including 8,000 joint replacements so far.
Dr Patil completed his post-graduate education at Kasturba Medical College Manipal. He was awarded D‘Othro in 1990 followed by the MS (Ortho) in 1991 with a Gold medal. In 1992, Sharan moved to the UK for further training and worked in some of the premier teaching institutions in north-west England, including Alder Hey’s Children’s Hospital – one of the largest paediatric hospitals in Europe. This institution, known for many firsts in the world of orthopaedics, gave him extensive training in operating on challenging orthopaedic problems in children. The other renowned organizations where he gained valuable experience were Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Hope Hospital, Manchester and Warrington District General Hospital.
Speaking about his appointment as President, ISHKS, Dr Patil said, "It is an honour to be bestowed the Presidency of ISHKS, the most prestigious body of orthopaedics specialists in India. I look forward to working along with my fellow doctors to bring the latest technology and learnings in orthopaedic research and solutions and make these accessible to our citizens. For all of us, it is a privilege to be a doctor serving this nation and we do not take our responsibilities lightly. Together we will place India’s Orthopaedic outcomes and service excellence on the world map as best in class. This is my vision for our fraternity at ISHKS.”
