Surrogate mothers to get general health insurance coverage
Couples who wish to become parents through surrogacy must provide general health insurance coverage to a surrogate mother for 36 months
Government of India has come up with new rules to ensure that surrogate mothers get general health insurance coverage to deal with any unforeseen medical condition that may be associated with pregnancy or post-pregnancy complications. According to the latest Surrogacy (Regulation) Rules, couples who wish to become parents through surrogacy must provide general health insurance coverage to a surrogate mother for 36 months. The insurance coverage should be sufficient to pay for any pregnancy-related issues as well as complications related to delivery after birth.
The number of times any surrogacy procedure is attempted on the surrogate mother should not exceed three, according to the guidelines published by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The surrogate mother may be allowed for abortion during the process of surrogacy by the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.
The Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021 came into force on January 25 this year. The rules issued also mentioned the requirement and qualifications for persons employed at a registered surrogacy clinic beside the form and manner for registration and fee for a surrogacy clinic.
