TCS, IIT KGP to launch advanced research center for innovation in digital health, robotics, intelligent systems

IMT News Desk

The new center will house three state-of-the-art labs that enable TCS scientists to work on cutting-edge technologies

Tata Consultancy Services has set up an advanced research centre in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) to produce high-quality research in the areas of digital health, robotics and intelligent systems leveraging edge computing, embedded systems, and AI.

Located in the institute’s research park in New Town, Kolkata, the TCS Research Center will feature three state-of-the-art laboratories where over 150 TCS scientists will explore cutting-edge technologies and push the boundaries of innovation.

The laboratories will be in the domains of – Sensing and Communications, Edge Computing and Analytics, and Robotics and Visual Computing.

Researchers will have access to state-of-the-art equipment at the center enabling them to accelerate innovations in cutting-edge technologies such as edge computing, embedded systems and Artificial Intelligence. This new centre serves as a testament to TCS’ rich history of collaboration with the academia to create business and societal impact.

Dr Harrick Vin, Chief Technology Officer, TCS, said, “TCS is transforming how industry has traditionally engaged with elite institutes of research and learning. One of our focus areas is to co-locate our research and innovation labs in academic institutions to enable a more efficient exchange of knowledge and talent. We initiated this journey with our move into the IIT Madras Research Park in Chennai a few years back. The establishment of our research and innovation lab at the IIT Kharagpur Research Park is the next step of this strategic journey. At IIT KGP, we are funding several research programs; co-innovating with them will lead to vastly improved outcomes for both parties.”

The centre will anchor TCS-funded research programmes that will be launched in partnership with academic partners, including IIT KGP. The TCS Research Center at IIT KGP will also boast of a customer experience centre where TCS clients across industries such as mining, agriculture, mobility, healthcare, manufacturing, and retail can gain exclusive experience of original research concepts by TCS. Workshops held at the customer experience centre will be open to external participation where TCS scientists, industry subject matter experts as well as the IIT KGP faculty will collaborate to find solutions to industry problems. Building on the strong relationship shared by TCS and IIT KGP, this centre will serve as a pioneer for setting up similar labs in the future.

Professor Virendra Kumar Tewari, Director, IIT Kharagpur, said: “The Advanced Research Center will strengthen our strategic collaboration with TCS, underscored by their presence in the newly established IIT KGP Research Park, Kolkata. This partnership represents a significant leap forward in harnessing cutting-edge technologies to address some of the most pressing challenges in healthcare and automation. By combining IIT Kharagpur’s world-class research capabilities with TCS’s industry-leading expertise, we aim to drive transformative innovations that can enhance quality of life, improve healthcare delivery, and contribute to the growing field of intelligent systems. The centre will not only foster groundbreaking research but also create opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations, empowering the next generation of technologists and researchers to shape the future.”
