Chennai has witnessed the launch of The Universal Health Code, a nearly 300-page volume positioned as a comprehensive “owner’s manual” for the human body, bringing together evidence-based medical insights from 50 specialists who studied together in the 1984 batch of Madras Medical College. Conceived as a single, integrated reference rather than another disease-specific handbook, the book aims to help readers understand how their bodies work so they can make better day-to-day decisions about food, lifestyle and preventive health.

The first copies were released in Chennai on February 24, 2026 by Dr. Ravi Pachamuthu, Chairman, SRM Group, and Prof. Mohamed Rela, Chairman, Rela Hospital. The inaugural copies were received by former Indian cricketer and current RCB batting coach Dinesh Karthik, in the presence of Dr. Vijay C. Bose, Joint Director & Senior Consultant, who compiled the book, along with the team from Wings Publications. The authors, all practising clinicians across diverse specialties, have spent five years assembling the material, which is written in simple, non-technical language and supported by illustrations to make complex physiological processes easier for a lay audience to grasp.

Unlike conventional health guides that offer prescriptive, sometimes conflicting, advice by condition or organ system, The Universal Health Code deliberately avoids issuing rigid do’s and don’ts. Instead, it explains the inner workings of the body as a whole, encouraging readers to think of it the way they would a user manual for a car or appliance: a reference that shows how different systems connect, where problems typically arise, and what day-to-day choices help keep everything running optimally. By focusing on mechanisms rather than quick-fix tips, the authors argue that individuals are better equipped to navigate the flood of health information and make decisions that suit their own contexts.

Dr. Ravi Pachamuthu described the work as a first-of-its-kind attempt to unify medical understanding for the general public. “For the first time, we have a universal user manual for the entire human body, offering a holistic view instead of fragmented, compartmentalised guidance that may even contradict across specialties,” he said, congratulating the contributing doctors and Dr. Bose in particular. He added that the initiative is especially timely as India grapples with a rising tide of lifestyle-related illnesses, noting that the authors have taken on the task of “enhancing public awareness – particularly in curtailing lifestyle diseases – in the best interest of the society.”

Dr. Vijay C. Bose, who led the effort to compile the book, said the project grew out of concern over the growing burden of conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease, and the confusion many people experience when they encounter siloed advice targeted at individual diseases. “We believe this is the age of knowledge, where people must be empowered with clear knowledge of the body’s inner workings,” he said. “Modeled on the concept of a user or owner’s manual, this book enables readers to understand how their body functions so they can make the right lifestyle choices. It is one thing to be disease-free; it is another to achieve optimal health.” The goal, he stressed, is not just to help people avoid illness but to guide them “toward that higher standard of well-being.”

The launch event also featured remarks from the chief guests on the escalating impact of lifestyle diseases on India’s health system and the need for more robust public-health education models. Several of the contributing authors shared insights from their chapters, reinforcing the book’s central message that long-term health depends on an integrated understanding of how different bodily systems interact, rather than isolated tips for single conditions. With its cross-specialty authorship and accessible format, The Universal Health Code positions itself as a tool for patients and families who want to move beyond symptom-based advice to a more holistic understanding of their own bodies.
