In a landmark move to tackle global challenges, the University of Liverpool (UK) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru have unveiled a joint seed fund aimed at accelerating research collaborations in artificial intelligence (AI), health, and space technologies.
This initiative builds on a 2023 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that deepened ties between the two prestigious institutions, particularly through linkages between their historic biochemistry departments among the world’s oldest. A pivotal visit by a University of Liverpool delegation to IISc in September 2025 further solidified commitments across key research domains.
The seed fund will prioritize breakthroughs in:
- Applications of AI
- Biomedical and Life Sciences
- One Health/Infectious Diseases
- Quantum Technology
- Space
Both universities have pledged substantial annual co-investments for an initial three-year period, fueling innovative projects with real-world impact.
Beyond funding, the partnership emphasizes nurturing early-career researchers via robust PhD training programs that blend UK and Indian academic strengths, including faculty exchanges, co-supervision, bilateral symposia, and workshops.
Professor Tariq Ali, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement and Partnerships at the University of Liverpool, hailed the fund as a “powerful platform” uniting world-leading expertise. “Through collaboration in AI, biotechnology, health and life sciences, quantum technologies and space, while investing in the next generation, we’re strengthening research links and delivering international impact,” he said. “We eagerly anticipate the innovative ideas and enduring partnerships this will spark.”
Prof. Baladitya Suri, Chair of the Office of International Relations at IISc, echoed the sentiment: “Academic collaborations advance science, education, and innovation for societal good. This partnership fosters interdisciplinary dialogue, knowledge sharing, and sustainable engagement through joint programs.”
