Walkathon Organized to Generate Awareness on Breastfeeding

To mark World Breastfeeding Week 2026, Neonatology Association of Tamil Nadu in association with the Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, and Rotary Club of Kilpauk Chennai organized Breastfeeding Awareness Walkathon to promote the importance of breastfeeding and encourage greater public awareness about maternal and infant health. 

To mark World Breastfeeding Week 2026, Neonatology Association of Tamil Nadu in association with the Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, and Rotary Club of Kilpauk, Chennai organised Breastfeeding Awareness Walkathon to promote the importance of breastfeeding and encourage greater public awareness about maternal and infant health.  

The walkathon was inaugurated by Dr. V. Lakshmi, President, Neonatology Association of Tamil Nadu & Head of Department, Neonatology, Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals and Dr. Abhilash Bhaskaran, President, Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk, in the presence of senior clinicians and leadership from Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals. The initiative was supported by Ekam Foundation as the NGO partner and partnered by OGSSI and the IAP Chennai City Branch, reflecting a united commitment towards strengthening breastfeeding awareness and improving maternal and newborn health. 

The walkathon commenced at Besant Nagar Beach and covered a distance of 2 km. Participants carried placards highlighting the importance of breastfeeding and its benefits for infants, spreading awareness among the public.

Over 500 participants, including neonatologists, paediatricians, nurses, lactation consultants, college students and members of the public, took part in the walkathon to highlight the vital role of breastfeeding in ensuring the healthy growth and development of infants while creating greater awareness on supporting mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey.
