World IVF Day and World Embryology Day Decoding the Infertility Burden Initiative by Oasis- Centre for Reproductive Medicine

Forty years on 25th July  1978 John Brown and Lesley brown were the most happiest and the most luckiest couple as this day witnessed the birth of the Worlds First Test Tube Baby Louise Brown who was born to this couple in Royal Oldham Hospital, United Kingdom. Today Louis Brown is proud mother of two sons who were conceived naturally and celebrating her 40th Birthday. She is the first among 6 and half millions and still counting babies who have been born through IVF.

This day was declared the World IVF Day following the first IVF baby’s birth in the world. To commemorate the birth of the ‘First IVF baby’, Fertility experts come together on July 24, 2017 to celebrate the occasion of the World IVF Day

Infertility is becoming an epidemic for young Indians. More and more young couples are seeking treatment for infertility. Infertility is the inability to conceive by natural means, and is a medical condition with high prevalence affecting nearly 10 to 15% of married couples in India. Nearly 27.5 million couples who are actively seeking children suffer from infertility. It is estimated that while female factor accounts for 40 of infertility among couples, infertility attributable to male factors is on the rise and constitutes 30-40% of infertility too.

The key reasons for infertility are both lifestyle and clinical factors. Its more alarming for city like Hyderabad  as the the current national Total Fertility Rate (TFR) average is at 2.51, Telanganaand AP stands  at 1.7, as compared to 2.6 recorded for the erstwhile undivided AP during NFHS-3 conducted in 1992-93.

Fundamentally there are two key factors: at play Lifestyle and clinical,  Lifestyle factors such as Increasing marital age, delay in child bearing, rising alcohol and tobacco consumption and rising levels of obesity  and  Clinical factors such as  Increasing prevalence of medical conditions such as poly-cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), tuberculosis, endometriosis etc.

The recently-released National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-4 (2015-16) shows a decline in fertility in both AP and Telangana state. As per NFHS-4, TFR is 1.5 in urban areas and 2 in rural areas. The total TFR for Telangana state as per NFHS-4 is same as AP, 1.7. However, for urban areas it is 1.7 while it is 1.9 for rural areas. This means even rural areas are catching up on low fertility rates.

Talking about the objective of Celebrating World IVF Day Dr Durga G Rao, Co- Founder and Medical Director of Oasis Centre for Reproductive Medicine stated that “ We would like to acknowledge the work of Dr Rober Edward who is known of the father of the test tube baby as the first test tube baby of the world Louise brown who turns 40 today was a master piece creation of Robert Edward. Since then the technologist have evolved and scaled new heights and we as a team of clinicians and embryologist have been constantly working on the newer techniques in assisted reproduction space. Adding Further she said that in our country so many days are celebrated but no body is aware that 24th July actually is celebrated as World IVF Day. Its our effort with help of media which we would like to create awareness about World IVF days and we would invite people to walk into any of our 8 centres in Hyderabad, Warangal, Vijaywada and Vizag and Chennai for a free counseling and getting to know more about Fertility treatments. “

Dr Durga G Rao also added “”Hyderabad city has seen a huge increase in terms of awareness and also an increase in number of male fertility in last 10-15 years, we come across both male and female fertility issues  in our Centre and mostly it is due to the genetic disorders, obesity, environmental pollution, lifestyle issues, stress  , the other peculiar phenomenon we encounter in the state is that the mean age in atleast 40 to 45 percent of the infertile couple has been actually falling from 35 plus to 30 plus which is an alarming situation”. “

Adding Further she said  “Oasis is one of the few centres in India which provides PGS & PGD . PGS  & PGD with Next generation sequencing is a recent development in modern medicine which is used it assess the genetic profile of the embryo before it is implanted there by increasing the chances of healthy foetus. This is helpful in couple with multiple failed IVF cycles and previous implantation failures, recurrent pregnancy failures, male factor infertility(Azoospermia), advanced maternal age. And so far we have done more than 100 PGS & PGDs in Oasis, ”

Talking on the occasion Dr Krishna Chaitanya – Scientific Head and Clinical Embryologist  of Oasis Centre for Reproductive Medicine said that “ In India the general notion or myth is that infertility clinics are meant only for treating women, the entire male infertility gamut is just ignored. According to Journal of Reproductive Sciences “Male factor” infertility is seen as an alteration in sperm concentration and/or motility and/or morphology in at least one sample of two sperm analyzes, collected 1 and 4 weeks apart,   in India,  nearly 50% of infertility is related to the reproductive anomalies or disorders in the male. Hence it is important that the male infertility is evaluated completely when a couple come forward for fertility treatment. We, at Oasis pride ourselves about the impeccable standards we maintain in our IVF lab which is an advanced lab. The lab is crucial for the treatments offered at our centre and we ensure that the highest level of quality is maintained here. Our lab is one of the very few labs in India that has proper Total Quality Management in place which optimizes the results of the Assisted Reproductive Techniques. We are first in AP to provide advanced services like PGS/ PGD /IVM/ mTESE/ Vitrification/ Fertility preservation”.
